Robert Bain (SA 1911 - 1973) 

"DIE OU KAAPSE SKOLLIE" Solid Bronze Sculpture

What a find on the Auctions and starting at R1!!! Here we have an original solid bronze sculpture by renowned Professor Robert Bain who has had countless exhibitions, commissions, amongst others commissioned by the Anton von Wouw Foundation to do complete restoration of all Von Wouw plaster statues. Amongst his major works are:

  • Major Miller’s Bust (South Africa’s pioneer aviator) housed in the Port Elizabeth Airport.
  • The Bronze Relief Doors (10 ft × 6 ft) (the signs of the Zodiac) for the S.A Reserve Bank in Port Elizabeth.The Bronze Relief Doors
  • A 12 ft modern concrete Christ in port Elizabeth.
  • A twice life-size Bust of King George VI whom he sketched on the Royal Tour of South Africa.
  • A statue titled “Lobola” (the African purchase of a bride) which was presented to General J. Smuts.
  • The Anton Van Wouw Foundation commissioned him to do the complete restoration of all the Von Wouw plaster statues (the Hunting Bushman, the scout etc.)
  • South African Airways commissioned him to do a new emblem for them. He did a large modern Flying Springbok in gold anodised aluminium, etc, etc, etc, etc,

The sculpture is impressed with R Bain's signature on the back of the sculpture and dated '55. The sculpture is placed on a stone plinth and the front of the plinth with a copper plaque with title of the sculpture and artist name. With plinth, it stands 20.5cm tall, and the plinth measures 10.5x7.5cm. Weight: 1.385kg
