An EXCELLENT example of Border War, 1980s SADF Infantry School/ Association Award and Medallion Lot attested to Maj-General D.J. Mortimer. This assortment appears to be in a VF/F state , with detailed Relief on all Certificates, Medallions, Pennant, Plaque, Cufflinks etc. All insignia present and detailed. Minor Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface.
The Recipient, Major-General Deon James Mortimer - was Chief of Army : Staff Logistics. This officer was responsible for all logistical requirements of the Defence Force.
The post was created in 1974, by Lt. General H.P. Laubscher , appointing Mortimer to this role. General Mortimer testified at the TRC ( Truth & Reconciliation Commission) in the late 1990s on behalf of the former SADF.
Deon James Mortimer, joined the Union Defence Force in 1956 at the Army Gymnasium; before attending the Military Academy in Stellenbosch in 1957. He was a candidate Officer , being the first South African to enter the Army with a Degree of Bachelor of Military Science Cum Laude.
Mortimer was Commissioned as a Lieutenant, at the Saldanah Bay Ceremony and was selected to join as a visiting Officer at the U.S. Army Officer Training Course (2nd Infantry Division) , Fort Benning , Georgia in 1963. He completed the U.S. Army Ranger Course and Leadership skills program - qualifying as a Parachutist at Fort Bragg. North Carolina.
This Officer served as a Military Attache, to Spain, Portugal, visiting Mozambique, Angola & Equatorial Guinea during the Colonial Conflict. In 1959 , he was inducted into the Disa-Orde , as a Ridder or 'Knight' with Certificate.
During the Border War in SWA/ Angola, Major General Mortimer provided direct assistance to the SA Army Infantry School , 31 Battalion (201), 32 Battalion- as well as - 1 Parachute Battalion & 44 Parachute Brigade.
