The primitive Cruise Lamp was popular in the 1600's to 1700's, and still widely used into the 19th century by poor households. A simple lamp, the Cruise is basically a formed metal bowl to hold fuel (oil) with an indentation or channel to hold a wick. This was a durable improvement over the clay pottery lamps of ancient times. The word "cruise" is of Scottish origin and seems to have been derived from cruse, meaning "a vessel for oil."
These little lamps typically burned oil or animal fat/lard. The oil could come from vegetation (like olive oil or flax oil), or animal sources (like fish or whale oil). They could be hung or left sitting on a table
The wick was a piece of twisted cotton that sat in the oil and was held in place by the spout. The lamps came with wick picks to pull the wick out farther and keep it burning
