A LARGE 26CM LONG QUEEN CONCH (STROMBUS GIGAS) SEASHELL WITH BEAUTIFUL PINKISH INTERIOR AND 20CM WIDE FLARE
ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SEASHELLS. A LARGE 26CM LONG QUEEN CONCH (STROMBUS GIGAS) SHELL.
The Queen conch shell is known for its heavy, spiral-shaped shell with a glossy pink or orange interior, a flared outer lip, and blunt spines on the shoulder.
THEY CAN LIVE A LONG TIME UP TO 30 YEARS. THE THICKER THE FLARE OF THE CONCH, THE OLDER IT IS. As the conch matures, the outer lip of the shell flares out, becoming thicker and more pronounced. HUGE DELICATE FLARE IS IN TACT WHICH IS RARELY SEEN.
The inside of the shell, or aperture, is a glossy pink, orange, or yellow color. A hardened, sickle-shaped structure at the tip of the foot that acts as a "door" to the shell, allowing the conch to retract its body and protect itself. The orange-yellow mantle, located around the soft body of the conch, secretes the shell.
The exterior color of the shell is such that it helps it blend with the environment and saves the conches from predators. Inside the conch shell is the soft body of the animal that is edible. The Queen Conch meat is consumed in the Caribbean countries as a delicacy.
