This stunning antique brass E. Thomas & Williams miners safety lamp is 34cm tall (including the handle) x 9cm across. It is a rare and very collectable miner's lamp. The lamps were ingeniously designed over 180 years ago to alert coal miners to danger. Since that time, they have been made with meticulous care for use in deep pit mines and oil riggers. Countless miners depended on the lifesaving brass safety lamps. These cambrian safety lamps’ main function was to detect the presence of explosive methane gas, a constant hazard to underground miners. The flame inside the lamp’s chamber could be “read” for dangerous levels of gas by observing specified changes in its colour and shape. The glass in the lamp is original and please note the condition of the internal mechanism. Please view the pics carefully to fully appreciate this stunning antique lamp and to confirm the condition.
