Ancient Judaea

2000 Year Old Prutah Coin

Agrippa I
From the Year 37 to 44 AD

Coins of the Bible - Acts 12:1-25

An Ancient Prutah coin from Judaea Under Agrippa I(37 to 44 AD)

Herod Agrippa I (circa 10 BCE44 CE) was a king of Judea and the grandson of Herod the Great. He ruled over a territory that eventually encompassed all of his grandfather's former kingdom, making him the last ruler to unite Judea under a single monarch before full Roman provincial governance.

Agrippa was raised in Rome, where he formed connections with key figures like Emperor Caligula, who later expanded his territory. In 41 CE, Emperor Claudius granted Agrippa control over Judea and Samaria, solidifying his power and restoring the kingdom to its Herodian-era extent.

Agrippa is portrayed in historical accounts as a politically astute and popular ruler. He sought to maintain favor with both his Jewish subjects and the Roman authorities. In the New Testament (Acts 12), Agrippa is noted for persecuting the early Christian church, ordering the execution of the Apostle James and imprisoning Peter.

Agrippa's reign ended abruptly in 44 CE when he died under mysterious circumstances, ascribed by some sources to divine punishment. His death marked the end of Herodian rule in Judea, leading to the establishment of direct Roman administration
