Ancient Judaea

2000 Year Old Prutah Coin

Governor Porcius Festus
From the Year 59 to 62 AD

Coins of the Bible - Acts 25 to 26

An Ancient Prutah coin from Judaea as a Roman Province(59 to 62 AD)

Porcius Festus was a Roman procurator(governor) of Judea, serving from approximately 59 to 62 CE during the reign of Emperor Nero. He succeeded Antonius Felix and inherited a volatile province marked by unrest and religious tensions. Festus is best known for his role in the trial of the Apostle Paul, as recorded in the New Testament (Acts 2526).

Shortly after taking office, Festus dealt with Paul, who had been imprisoned by Felix. The Jewish leaders sought to have Paul tried in Jerusalem, but Paul, as a Roman citizen, exercised his right to appeal to Caesar. Festus convened a hearing in Caesarea, where Paul defended himself, proclaiming his faith in Christ. Festus, unfamiliar with Jewish religious disputes, consulted King Herod Agrippa II, who found no fault in Paul but upheld his appeal to Caesar.

Festuss tenure was short but marked by efforts to suppress rebellion and maintain order in a province increasingly on the brink of revolt, culminating in the Jewish War (6670 CE) a few years after his death.

A prutah was a coin used in ancient Judea during the late Second Temple period, particularly under the rule of the Hasmoneans, Herod the Great, and the Roman procurators. It was a low-denomination coin intended for everyday transactions.
