Ancient Judaea

2000 Year Old Copper Prutah Coin

Jewish War / 1st Jewish Revolt

From the Year 67 to 68 AD

A Prutah coin from year two of the first Jewish Revolt. Dating it to the years 67 to 68 AD

The Jewish War (6670 CE) was a major revolt by the Jews in Judea against Roman rule, marking one of the most significant conflicts of the Roman Empire. The rebellion stemmed from long-standing tensions over heavy taxation, religious oppression, and Roman interference in Jewish governance.

The revolt began in 66 CE, sparked by protests against corrupt Roman officials and the desecration of Jewish religious practices. Early Jewish victories, including the defeat of a Roman legion at the Battle of Beth Horon, emboldened the rebels. However, the Roman Empire, under Emperor Nero and later Vespasian, launched a massive counteroffensive led by General Vespasian and his son, Titus.

The conflict culminated in 70 CE with the siege of Jerusalem, during which the Romans breached the city walls, destroyed much of the city, and set fire to the Second Temple, a devastating event for Jewish religious and cultural life. The war resulted in significant loss of life, the enslavement of thousands of Jews, and the diaspora of Jewish communities.

The Jewish War ended with the fall of Masada in 73 CE, solidifying Roman dominance in the region. The destruction of the Temple remains a pivotal moment in Jewish history, commemorated by Tisha BAv, a day of mourning
