 Antique original brass seal of Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper - 7th Earl of Shaftesbury - He later became Lord Shaftesbury after his father died in 1851

Born 1801 - died 1885

He was a member of parliament since 1826 & supported the Duke of Wellington

In 1838 he provided the first proposal to resettle Jews in Palestine & in 1839 he published an article in the times where he urged the Jews to return to Palestine to seize the lands of Galilee & Judea

Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper introduced the Mines & Collieries Act 1842 in Parliament to outlaw the employment of women & children in underground coal mines.

In 1877 he gave evidence to the Committee on Lunacy Laws that it is too easy for a sane person to be detained in asylums
