An extremely rare and superb cowrie shell silver snuff box by John Townsend. John and Thomas Townsend worked together as goldsmiths and jewellers in 1834 and 1825. His address from 1847 to 1841 was in Grahamstown in the Cape Colony. (The cowry shell has a fine crack at the back, which is quite common and to be expected of a fine piece this age).
