Chacruna is a tropical shrub. This plant is used in the preparation of the brew ayahuasca by boiling down its leaves which contain the hallucinogenic DMT, and the vine Benisteriopsis caapi, which inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidase enzymes that would otherwise absorb the DMT.
To indigenous people of the Amazon the role of Chacruna is seen as the messenger, the plant that makes the teachings of ayahuasca visible and audible.
In Quechua, chaqruy is a verb meaning "to mix".
