DARK GREEN VERDALITE TOURMALINE 3,18CT GEMSTONE NATURAL AND UNTREATED FROM MOZAMBIQUE WITH BEAUTIFUL SCISSOR CUT
A BEAUTIFUL 3,18 CARAT DARK GREEN VERDALITE TOURMALINE GEMSTONE FROM MOZAMBIQUE WITH A BEAUTIFUL SCISSOR CUT. COMES WITH A BEAUTIFUL PERSPEX PRESENTATION CASE AND VELVET BAG.
THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT FROM A SELLER IN BANGKOK THAILAND IN 2011 WITH THE COUNTRY OF ORIGEN INDICATED AS MOZAMBIQUE. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A NATURAL UNTREATED GEMSTONE.
IT APPEARS TO BE A REAL TOURMALINE GEMSTONE AS IT PASSED OR GAVE AN UNCLEAR ON ALL THE TESTS I COULD PERFORM: PASSED SCRATCH TEST: IT SCRATCHES GLASS EASILY IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS. (MOHS HARDNESS GLASS 5.5-6.5 TOURMALINE 7.0-7.5 QUARTZ 7.0-7.5) UNCLEAR INCLUSIONS TEST: NO INCLUSIONS EYE VISIBLE. Inclusions in any gemstone are usually not desired but with Tourmaline this is often the case though and is an indication that the stone is natural. Tourmalines are rarely free form inclusions. PASSED ELECTRON UV LIGHT EMISSION TEST: NO UV REACTION AS IT SHOULD BE. TOURMALINE IS NORMALLY INERT AND SHOWS NO FLUORENCENT REACTION. Only some green Chrome Tourmalines can fluoresce weak to moderate red under wave UV light due to the chromium component. GLASS AND ALL QUARTZ VARIETIES ALSO DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT. (THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE. ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.) PASSED THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST: TESTED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WITH A MIZAR PRESTIGE SERIES 2 DIAMOND TESTER. IT DID NOT MOVE UP THE LADDER A LITTLE FROM STANDARD LEVEL 3. TOURMALINE HAS A 0,01 ALMOST GLASSLIKE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AT LOW TEMP AND A LEVEL OF 3 IS THE NORM FOR THIS TESTER. (WITH THIS TESTER GLASS 0,002 MAKES NO MOVEMENT.)
THIS TOURMALINE GEMSTONE HAS A SUPPLIED GISA (GEMMOLOGY INSTITUTE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA) CERTIFICATE. THIS COMPANY DOES NOT HAVE A GOOD REPUTATION ONLINE. THEY COULD NOT BE CONTACTED BY CONTACT DETAILS SUPPLIED ON THE BACK. THERE IS NO WEBSITE TO CHECK PAST REPORTS THAT I COULD FIND. I DO NOT KNOW IF STILL IN EXISTENCE. TO THEIR CREDIT THOUGH I HAVE SEEN CERTIFICATES BY THEM THAT I COULD INDEPENDENTLY VERIFY THAT THEY HAVE CORRECTLY STATED THE GEMSTONES QUALITIES.
SIZE: 8,38mm x 6,65mm x 5,9mm
DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT. THESE GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. I HAVE TRIED TO VERIFY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE ANY STATEMENTS OR CLAIMS BY DOING SOME RESEARCH AND PRELIMARY TESTS ON EACH GEMSTONE.
TOURMALINE: Rubies bring the colour red to mind while emeralds make one think of green. However, there is one such stone that is available in all the colours of a rainbow. Yes, we are talking about tourmalines. The colour of these stones ranges from bright yellow and warm orange to cool blue to green hues and deep black. It is no surprise that tourmalines are known as the gemstone with the widest colour range. Bi coloured tourmalines with green and pink hues are known as watermelon tourmalines. Indicolite refers to a dark violet-blue or greenish blue tourmaline. Similarly, tourmalines in shades of red are known as Rubellite. Paraiba tourmalines with their neon blue hues are the most expensive ones in the family of this gemstone. Tourmaline is not a single mineral. In fact, it is a group of minerals with inter-related physical and chemical properties. Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate mineral composed of aluminum, iron, magnesium, lithium, and potassium. Each tourmaline stone has the same crystal structure. Yet, the elements inside it may be different. Tourmalines measure 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This means that it is quite hard and resistant to scratches. Brazil has been the world's leading source of tourmaline for nearly 500 years. In the 1500s Portuguese explorers obtained green and blue tourmaline from indigenous people. They thought that these colorful stones were emeralds and sapphires and sent them back to Portugal. Today, discoveries of tourmaline of various kinds have been made in African countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania. TOURMALINE IS NATURALLY AVAILABLE ABUNDANTLY AND IN MANY COLOURS. HENCE IT IS USUALLY NOT MADE IN A LAB.
