The inscription on the Oracle of Delphi 'Nothing in excess.' C.S. Lewis described temperance as going to the 'right length but no further.' Easy to say, hard to practice - and if it was tough in 300 BC, or in the 1940s, it feels all but impossible today. Yet it's the most empowering and important virtue any of us can learn.Without self-discipline, all our plans fall apart. Here, Ryan Holiday shows how to cultivate willpower, moderation and self-control in our lives. From Aristotle and Marcus Aurelius, to Toni Morrison and Queen Elizabeth II, he illuminates the great exemplars of its practice and what we can learn from them. Moderation is not about it is about self-respect, focus and balance. Without it, even the most positive traits become vices. But with it, happiness and success are the key is not more but finding the right amount.
Unless we'd rather be adrift, vulnerable, disordered, disconnected, we are responsible for ourselves. Technology, access, success, power, privilege- this is only a blessing when accompanied by the second of the cardinal virtues: self-restraint.
A few years ago, The Obstacle Is The Way changed my life. But this new book by Ryan holiday might be my favorite. Discipline is Destiny draws on the stories of historical figures such as Lou Gehrig, Queen Elizabeth II, boxer Floyd Patterson, and Marcus Aurelius, as well as the cautionary tales of Napoleon, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Babe Ruth.
I love the short chapters. Theyre easy to digest and made the book easy to read. Its also worth mentioning Ryan Holidays writing style. He frequently incorporates quotes and anecdotes from some of the smartest people throughout human history.
It doesn't matter if you're a writer, artist, or an employee at Walmart. This book is definitely worth reading as soon as possible.
