Book Description: Faber and Faber, London - Book and wrapper still very good even though it belonged to a library in a previous life - Same edition Google image used . >>> I really enjoyed The Alexandria Quartet, and with similar style and eloquent vocabulary, this saga is laid out. One has to work reading anything by Durrell, and this book is no exception. Just slow down and soak it up. It's the kind of English writing so splendid that you often simply pause and marvel at the wonder of it. It's like listening to Gilbert and Sullivan and expecting any current music to match its spectacular essence. Durrell won't come again soon. Contemporary readers should be required some exposure to this man's genius. The Avignon Quintet is on my horizon. No need to wish me well. (Neil on Goodreads)
