Description: Early 19th Century Chinese Gouache of Figures in a Parade. Ref.# AR22
Maker: Unknown
Date: Estimated early 19th Century
History: A typical Chinese Export painting in Gouache of a parade. The painting is done on the inner bark of the Tetrapanax papyrifer (the Pith plant), more commonly known as the Rice-Paper plant. Many cities in China, especially in the Guadong Province, were trading centres during the 18th and 19th centuries, and, apart from exporting porcelain, tea, silks etc, these paintings were also in high demand by the Europeans. The pith gave a unique texture to the painting with its velvety and almost translucent properties and the paintings portrayed life in China at that time. Since these paintings were done over many years, it is impossible to give an accurate date.
Description: Musicians leading a procession carrying banners
Condition: For its age, the painting remains in good condition. However, there are some small areas of damage, likely due to the fragility of the pith.
Dimensions: The frame measures 42 cm x 32.5 cm
Price: R480.00
For comparisonGoogle Chinese 19th Century Export paintings on Pith and you will see the average price is £100 each, equivalent to R2300.00
