Errol Norbury was born on the 28th June, 1949, in Johannesburg, to British parents. Talented and creative from an early age, Errol was guided by a private tutor for many years. When he completed his studies in Commercial and Illustrative Art at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa he entered the very competitive world of illustration and freelance artwork for Advertising Agencies.
In 1972 Errol chose to concentrate on fine art. It did not take him long to develop his own recognizable style. It soon became evident that Errol’s enthusiastic pursuit of intricate realism and his obvious enjoyment of strong vibrant colour appealed to collectors.
Errol Norbury’s sensibilities are those of the early 19th Century South African Artists of whom Dr. A C Bouman speaks of in ‘Painters of South Africa', saying:
“It is interesting to see how those pioneers won the heart of South Africans, who were and still are proud that the beauty of their country should be revealed in works of art. Their works are predominantly realistic. Realism in art requires good craftsmanship and unusual power of observation to create something more than a photographic reproduction.”
Errol bought a farm in the North of South Africa where he could live, feel, and experience and study his surroundings. In a short period of time he was known for his Baobab trees, bushveld scenes and wildlife.
During 1981 Errol was invited by the American Embassy to visit America. An exhibition was held in El Paso; Texas, where, to his delight, all of his paintings were sold. Further exhibitions were held in Dallas and New York.
Visiting London and Europe in 1992 gave him the opportunity to study the Great Masters. The presence and spirited vitality of these works had an impressive influence on his work.
He has received worldwide recognition for his exceptional painting of African Wildlife, European and African landscapes, seascapes and studies of ancient sailboats. He has exhibited in Dallas; Texas; USA, Paris; France, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Antwerp; Belgium, New York; USA, London; UK.
Errol Norbury has prospered and flourished as a professional artist living in South Africa, Europe, the USA and Australia. His paintings are permanently displayed in banks and hotels as well as by internationally recognized companies.
His painting, ‘HMS’ was chosen to be presented to her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent in April 1999. This painting is now on permanent display in the Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
Today Errol endorses the pioneering spirit of the early settlers as he paints Cape Dutch homesteads and vineyards, the mountain ranges standing aloof from the valley in an infinite range of shifting light and shade, the beaches and harbours of the Cape. He appears to have an infinite capacity to capture a wealth of the minutest details without loosing the picture as a whole.
