Hanukkah celebrates the re-dedication of the temple in 165BC by the Maccabees after its desecration by the Syrians. It is marked by the successive kindling of eight lights from the 9th Shamash (servant light) at the top. Historically in ancient times olive oil was used and the Hanukkah lamp was hung on the doorpost (opposite the Mezuzah) but many Jewish communities now place the lamp indoors although most of the Moroccan Jews still preserve the earlier tradition. This particular Hanukkah lamp measures 21cm x 15cm with the nine oil fonts (centre Shamash plus eight bottom fonts) protruding by 5cm. A rare and beautifully ornate find. Refer images
