Gryphaea is an extinct genus of oysters (family Ostreidae), characterized by its distinctive, curved shape. The shell is asymmetrical, with one side being more convex than the other, giving it its characteristic "toenail" appearance. These oysters are typically found in marine deposits, especially those from the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods.
