'Sir George Grey was an extraordinary man - a hero in an age of heroes. He started his career as an outstanding young officer who, while he was serving in Ireland, resigned his commission in the British army after objecting to the British treatment of the Irish.

... He founded hospitals and schools for all races in New Zealand and South Africa. Often against public opinion and sometimes at his own expense, he paved the way for the education of all.

Abhorrent as he found so much African superstition, the Cattle-Killing delusion especially, he equally loathed the racial attitudes of so many of his fellow British.'
