" This book, the first ever produced on the baNtwane, traces the vibrant artistic practices and traditions of these people, who settled in the Moutse district of present-day Mpumulanga province after buying a number of farms in this area in the early 20th centuy. Originally fom Botswana, the baNtwane have a long history of fierce independence and opposition to oppression. During the apatheid years , when many black communities were forced to accept 'independence' they actively fought to preserve their rights to remain citizens of South Africa. Yet they never lost their sense of identity and their concern to preserve traditions that are fast disappearing in other areas of the country. The pride that contemporary baNtwane take in thei cultue is clearly demonstrated by their ongoing commitment to upholding the many distinctive ritual and cultural practices documented in this book. This includes the initiation of girls and boys, who are encouraged to honour and value the traditions of thei baNtwane ancestors"
