The chinese Caphor Kist sprang up in the 18th & 19th Centuary, as a highly functional art .decorative piece While it is possible to find chests from the late 18th centuary , most available one were produced in the 18th centuary. They were valuable vessels for transporting silks, tea and porcelain from China to Europe.Therefore many found themselves homes in theĀ wealthiest European homes. They were mainlly used to store linens, blankets and clothes, these chests help to ensure moths did not eat the items stored.
This chest has beautiful carvings on the top front and sides of the chest, the brass catch could be replaced to ensure that it locks, the inside is raw camphor wood with the original tray, which is quite unusual to find as normally the trays are missing, some scuffs but nothing major and is normal wear considering the age of the kist.
