JOHANNES MEINTJES - KAMERADE EN ANDER VERHALE (1947)
A RARE FIND: THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THIS SCARCE PUBLICATION SELDOM PRESENTS ITSELF!
>> PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE END TO VIEW ART WORKS REPRODUCED IN THIS RARE BOOK <<
This may well be Meintjes's rarest book. It was the first production from his new publishing house (named Anton Anreith after the sculptor he admired and whose biography he authored in 1951).
Published in 1947, 'Kamerade' was written and illustrated (1944-1946) during Meintjes' early to mid-twenties, between the publication of 'Maggie Laubser' (1944) and 'Lyrical Work/Liriese Werk' (1948).
'Kamerade' appeared in a limited edition of 500 copies only, of which 25 were never made available for sale. This copy is not numbered and it may well have been one of the 25 copies never offered for sale as I acquired it directly from his widow's personal collection in 1990. The inside of the book (and binding) is in good condition (and it looks as if it has hardly been paged through).
Apart from 'Siembamba', this is the only work in this genre by this notable writer and artist - short stories with his own illustrations.
The dustjacket is in a somewhat poor condition and the cover boards of the book (front and back) reflect the age of the book: please get in touch if you require more information. The inside of the book, with its letterpress and illustrations in red and black on excellent text paper, is however in surprisingly good condition considering its age : it looks almost brand new.
As this is a limited edition of 500 copies, a number of art collectors have bought this book solely for the prints, which are by definition limited to an edition 500 copies each (and some of them signed in the plate). The size of the book is 230x165mm.

SKETCHES PUBLISHED IN THE BOOK
Johannes Meintjes was a painter that enjoyed tremendous public support for his art since early age and also received international acclaim as an author later on.
The fame he enjoyed as a 21 year old artist is unequalled in the South African history of art.
Meintjes died in 1980 and had established himself as a major South African painter and writer. He had painted more than a thousand canvases, produced dozens of sculptures and exhibited in all South Africa's major galleries.
Apart from numerous articles and smaller literary works, he had published 35 books, amongst them internationally authoritative works on South African history.
JOHANNES MEINTJES IN 1947 (OPENING OF HIS ARGUS EXHIBITION)
The correct spelling of his surname is 'Johannes Meintjes' (and not 'Johannes Meintjies')
Some of Meintjes' books are of historical GLBTQ+ interest as they are considered to be early examples of South African gay writing.
