Born in 1944, German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop (pronounced "yope") was, at the insistence of his father, studying advertising psychology in college until disinterest got the better of him and he dropped to work as a restaurateur and involve himself in the art world . In 1969 Joop began to study art formally but again, did not complete this course of training. It was not until he entered a fashion competition sponsored by Constance magazine of which he was awarded the top three prizes that his fashion career began in earnest.
Joop became a fashion editor at Neue Mode magazine until he left to work independently as a freelance journalist and designer in 1971. In 1978 he launched his first fur collection which garnered rave reviews. Joop introduced his first women's ready to wear collection in the early 1980s followed by his first men's wear collection. Shoes, jewelry, eyewear and fragrances soon followed and the designer branded his house JOOP!-with the exclamation representing energy and excitement.
His first self titled perfume, JOOP! by JOOP! was introduced in 1987 and this fresh, warm and flowery fragrance was an immediate hit. Other popular JOOP! women's perfumes include the intoxicating yet simple All About Eve, the rich and glamorous Jette and the sensuous Jette By Night. Popular JOOP! men's colognes include the classic spicy and woody JOOP! for Men introduced in 1989, the complicated yet exciting Go, the refreshing Jump, the alluring Night Flight as well as Wolfgang Joop.
