Citrullus amarus
The flesh of the bitter karkoer or bitterboela is not used by humans and are usually discarded, as they can cause poisoning in humans. The fruits are mostly used as fodder. The seeds may still be eaten.
Seeds also yield a rich oil that is used in cooking and for skin care. The seed contains a high percentage of oil which is similar to pumpkin seed oil and can be used in cooking. The seed oil has an anthelmintic action which is better than that of pumpkin seed oil.
Only recently it has received the attention of researchers and cosmetic industry thanks to the precious oil obtained from its seed. Seeds are made-up of about 35% protein, 50% oil and 5% dietary fibre.
