Among KAWSs signature Companions series, "Small Lie" has the most childlike charm. Clad in overall shorts, the Pinocchio-inspired figure bows its head in shame as if hiding from a parent after getting in trouble. KAWS debuted the character at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2016, presenting a 30-foot-tall version made of African hardwood. The following year, KAWS released 11-inch grey, brown, and black editions of the figure, produced in collaboration with Medicom Toy. Condition : 2 small ink marks to the back and right arm (see pics above). No damage or scratches. Overall very good condition.
Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, spent the first year of his career as an animator for Disney. After leaving in 1997, KAWS took inspiration from the companies signature cartoon, Mickey Mouse, to create his own set of characters that he named "Companions".
With gloved hands and X's for eyes, "Companions" first appeared in KAWS's graffiti works across New York city in the late 1990's. By the end of the decade the street artist created his first 3D version, and his characters have since taken on a variety of colours, sizes and poses.
In 2017, his 4-foot-tall "Seated Companion" broke the auction record for the series, selling for over $400,000. However, many of KAWS's "Companions" are more affordable, such as his vinyl sculptures produced in collaboration with esteemed manufacturers including Bounty Hunter, Bape, Medicom and his own brand OriginalFake which was active between 2006 and 2013.
