AMAZINGLY, THIS 1948 KWV TAWNY, IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE NEARLY 70 YEARS DOWN THE LINE FROM THE COMPANYS WINE EMPORIUM IN PAARL FOR R6500 A BOTTLE! ARTICLE IN TOP WINE SA DATED 4 JUNE 2015
KWV HAS BEEN A TRADITIONAL MAINSTAY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE SCENE FOR DECADES. FOUNDED IN 1918 THE SAME YEAR NELSON MANDELA WAS BORN, KWV HAS SEEN HOW THE SA WINE INDUSTRY HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS.
Reportedly aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak barrels, which adds complexity and depth to its character. Exacly when this 750ml KWV tawny port was bottled is unclear. The 1,5l 1948 magnum bottles was reportedly bottled in 1987 in commemoration of paarls 300 year anniversary. One report mentioned it was bottled in 1968 for the 50th anniversary of KWV. Notably however, this wine was bottled prior to the introduction of SAWIS certification and mandatory declaration of alcohol in 1989.
THE PORT'S TAWNY COLOUR, NUTTY TASTE AND RAISIN BOUQUET ENSURED THAT IT RECEIVED A SUPERIOR AWARD AS SEEN ON THE LABEL ON THE NECK OF THIS DECANTER. A MUST HAVE FOR THE COLLECTOR!
NOTE I HAVE FIVE 1961 MONIS COLLECTORS PORT BOTTLES FROM 1987 THAT COMMEMORATE THE 300 YEAR PAARL ANNIVERSARY ON AUCTION THIS WEEK. ALSO SOME OTHER HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER VINTAGE PORTS LIKE THIS HIGHLY REGARDED 1948 KWV PORT LIMITED RELEASE BOTTLE, ALSO AN AMAZING 96 YEAR OLD 1929 KWV PORT, A SEDGWICK OLF BROWN SHERRY 750ML CERAMIC BOTTLE STILL FULL AND SEALED, A CLOS MALVERNE 2002 RESERVE 1,5L BOTTLE IS WOODEN CRATE AND TWO KWV MUCADELL LIQUER WINE BOTTLES ONE FROM 1968 AND ONE FROM 1975.
SIZE: 30CM HIGH 9x7CM OVAL VOLUME 750ML
CONDITION: SEAL IS 100% AND LABELS AND BOTTLE IN GOOD CONDITION. SOME SEDIMENT ON WALLS OF NECK VISIBLE. ALTHOUGH FORTIFIED WINES (A WINE TO WHICH A DISTILLED SPIRIT, USUALLY BRANDY, HAS BEEN ADDED) LIKE PORT ALMOST NEVER SPOIL WITH AGE, I CAN UNFORTUNATELY NOT GUARANTEE HOW DRINKABLE THIS WINE WILL BE. BUT MOST FORTIFIED WINES AGE VERY WELL IN THE BOTTLE AND DO NOT "GO OFF" AFTER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF YEARS. THEY JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER!
KWV (KOOPERATIEWE WIJNBOUWERS VERENIGING) (1918-1966): KWV was founded as a winemaking co-operative on 8 January 1918 by wine makers from the Western Cape in South Africa. The name Koöperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Suid-Afrika is Dutch for "Co-operative Winemakers Union' of South Africa". KWV was established in order to secure bona fide wine farmers a continuously adequate return for their produce. It would buy from the farmers, sell to the merchants (with whom it would not compete on the local market) and then dispose of all production that was surplus to local demand. In October 2016 KWV was acquired by the Vasari group based in London. The KWV Headquarters and main production complex are situated in the Cape Winelands in Paarl.
FORTIFIED WINES: Fortification is the process of adding a grape spirit like brandy to wine during or after fermentation. The word fortify means to strengthen, reinforce, and protect. Back in the day before refrigeration and air-tight wine bottling was available, winemakers had to figure out a way to preserve their wine and prevent spoilage. As it turned out, adding distilled spirits to the wine did the trick. There are 5 main types of fortified wine, each with their own special characteristics: Sherry, Port, Madeira, Marsala and Vermouth. Port wine gets its sweetness from brandy that is added before the fermentation process is finished. There are different styles of port like Tawny, Ruby and Rose produced by differences in alcohol percentage (16-20%) and time to age (garnet-hued nutty tawny is aged more than fruity ruby and pink rose)
