This is a collection of 48 orginal photos of the Union Defence Forces in the field under Brigadier General George Brink in the late 1930s. The photos are not big (larger ones are 107mm x 70mm, and smaller ones 83mm x 58mm). There are 18 larger photos and 30 smaller ones.
Brink led the pre-WW2 deployment of Union Defence Force exercises in the Northern Transvaal from the end of 1937 to 1939. We assume that these photos were taken during this period. One photo clearly shows the Limpopo River Bridge with the bust of Alfred Beit. A typed strip with "Overwinning 7.8.38" is included.
The larger photos all have the number 4749 printed on the back, with an 8 in pencil. The smaller photos are numbered individually in pencil. There is some duplication between the larger and smaller photos, and minimally among photos of the same size.
