Saam met die gemeenskap en die bele��rde volk wat in die vuis van die vyandigheid en gevangenskap al vaster gekne"left">Die skrywer se presiese toneelopstellings, byvoorbeeld die plaas en die losieshuis, betrek die leser gou sensories by die bedrywighede, byvoorbeeld by die opveiling. Die geure van masjienolie en stysel ber��ik ons, en wanneer die kleure van die landskap, waarin tyd gelees kan word, ons o�� binneval, word die ritrympies, die raaisels en aanhalings ���n sagte dreunsang wat met die bekende geneesblaar, jagsiekbossie of koorsbossie, die pyn wat met die verloop van die boek kom, wil verweer.

Die beweging word uiteindelik egter net te traag om die uiteindelike betekenis met vernuf oor te dra. Dit is asof die stof die idee wil oorrompel. Dit wat met ons gelaat moes geword het, word vasgevang in die ratwerk van die wiel en die wa kom net te ongemerk op die werf aan.

Sou Van der Merwe met dieselfde geesdrif en navorsing, haar wonderlike skerp waarneming, haar hoofkarakter voor groter besluite en keuses geplaas het (innerlik of andersins), kon die traagheid verhoed geword het. Tempowisseling is vir die verhoog sowel as vir die gesproke en geskrewe woord belangrik om die onafgebroke aandag van die hoorder, leser of kyker te kry.


Die boek is nietemin ���n aanwins vir elke geskiedenisbewuste leser ��n ��� vanwe�� sy onmiddellikheid ��� ook vir die algemene leser. Karlien van der Merwe laat jou lag ��n huil, en haar humor maak van haar ���n skrywer van wie jy weer wil hoor. Sy is ook ���n digter en een van die skrywers van die Huis vir Afrikaanse Po��sie.
