Malangatana Valente Ngwenya (1936-2011) Face and Nude Study Original Ink on Paper Drawing

A WONDERFUL INTRIGUING FACE AND NUDE STUDY BY WORLD REKNOWNED MOZAMBICAN ARTIST MALANGATANA VALENTE NGWENYA (1936-2011). AN INTRIGUING BLACK INK ON PAPER DRAWING OF A SERIES OF OVERLAID AND INTERMINGLED FACES AND NUDE FIGURES. SOME REALISTICALLY HUMAN LOOKING, SOME SHOWING ELEMENTS OF TRANSFORMATION AND METAMORPHOSIS LIKE THE OVERSIZED HAND RESTING ON THE SHOULDER.

MALANGATANA VALENTE NGWENYA BORN ON 6TH JUNE 1936 WAS A WORLD REKNOWNED MOZAMBICAN AFRICAN CONTEMPORARY PAINTER AND POET. MALANGATANA NGWENYA FREQUENTLY EXHIBITED WORK UNDER JUST HIS FIRST NAME ALONE, MALANGATANA! MALANGATANA NGWENYA WAS ONE OF THE FEW AFRICAN ARTISTS TO GAIN SUBSTANTIAL WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION WHILE STILL STAYING IN AFRICA.

Malangatana's style is characterized by its dramatic figures and flamboyant yet restrained use of colour, and by its highly symbolic social and political commentary on everything from colonialism and war to peacetime rebuilding and the universality of the human experience.

After spending 18 months in jail in the 1960s under the colonialist Portuguese government of Mozambique some of his most famous drawings depicted prison life. Malangatana also had a contentious relationship with Christianity which expresses itself in his artwork. While he simultaneously viewed it as an imposed religion, part of the colonial structure that sought to subjugate African people and cultures.

He died on 5th January 2011 in Matosinhos, Portugal aged 74 years.

MALANGATANA VALENTE NGWENYA (1936-2011):
Born in 1936 Malangatana Ngwenya spent his early life attending missionary schools and helping his mother on the farm, while his father worked in South Africa as a miner.
In 1958, Ngwenya attended some functions of a local artists organization and the next year Ngwenya exhibited publicly for the first time, as part of a group show. Two years later came his first solo exhibition, at the age of 25. After his initial Mozambique debut, Malangatana began to receive international attention. This kicked off a period of prolific international exhibitions for Malangatana, and he would go on to exhibit in South Africa, Nigeria, Rhodesia, Angola, France, England, Pakistan, India and the USA over the next three years.
In 1964, Ngwenya, who had joined the nationalistic FRELIMO guerrillas, was detained by the Portuguese secret police and spent 18 months in jail. After the independence of Mozambique, Ngwenya openly rejoined FRELIMO, now the single-party communist organization that was ruling the new country.
After 1981 he worked full-time as an artist. His work was shown throughout Africa, and is in the collection of the National Museum of Art in Washington DC.
He was a founding member of the Mozambique Peace Movement and served as a representative to parliament from 1990 to 1994.
He died at the age of 74 on 5 January 2011, in northern Portugal.
