Gold medallions provide an excellent way to commemorate historical figures. Despite – or perhaps because of - South Africa’s tumultuous past, there have been several South Africans who have set a shining example of humanitarianism, and who deserve to be remembered. Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk are two such people.
The Mint of Norway developed the one-ounce gold Mandela/de Klerk medallion to honour the impressive achievements of these men. Together, they orchestrated the end of Apartheid and ushered in a new age. The two former presidents were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and the medallion coin was launched in July 2003 in remembrance of this event. Only 5,000 Mandela/de Klerk medallions are available throughout the entire world.
The coin is officially recognised by both the Nobel Institute and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, adding to its value as a collector’s item.
Own one ounce of pure gold
The Mandela / de Klerk medallion is a proof coin made out of one troy ounce of gold. A troy ounce comprises one ounce of pure gold mixed with small amounts of stronger metals. Pure gold is incredibly delicate and it is easily damaged. By adding trace amounts of copper, the medallions become more durable than if they were made only of gold.
Proof coins are different from bullion coins because they are designed to be collectable and are struck at an incredibly high quality. Bullion coins are valued at the price of their gold, while proof coins generally have higher value because they are much rarer than bullion coins.
Each side of the Mandela/de Klerk medallion coin is dedicated to one of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize winners. Mandela’s face is emblazoned on the converse side along with the words ‘A long walk to freedom’, while the reverse side features a bust of de Klerk and the phrase ‘To bring justice to everybody’.
Add the Mandela/de Klerk medallion to your collection
Numismatists know that proof coins featuring Nelson Mandela can increase exponentially in value over time. Add the face of de Klerk and its value increases again.
