The luminescence of Mother of Pearl has made it a most popular choice for jewellery and accessories for centuries. This iridescent substance is not a gem stone but rather is formed in the lining of the shells fresh-water or salt-water mollusks. Mother of pearl has a special symbolism in China, where it is highly prized as a stone that attracts fortune and happiness to anyone who owns it. It is considered a good luck amulet as well, and is often given to loved ones to wish them good luck and prosperity in life. | ![]() | |
PLEASE READ MY PAYMENT AND SHIPPING POLICY VERY WELL BEFORE BIDDING AS THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS My pictures and content are not available for re-use | Mother of Pearl gets its name from the fact that it is the iridescent lining of shell, where pearls can grow. Mother of Pearl has both traditional and New Age metaphysical and healing lore. It is said to attract prosperity. It is used in mystical work and lore to heighten intuition, psychic sensitivity, and imagination. It is purported to protect from negative influence, and transmute negative energy. It is said to be highly protective and a particularly potent stone of protection for children. A traditional lore use of Mother of Pearl is to purify environments. Mother of Pearl is also used in metaphysics to access primordial and racial memories. Crystal healing and folklore say that Mother of Pearl is helpful for high blood pressure, dizziness, improving vision, cataracts, and wound healing. |
The tradition of distributing wedding favours is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favour, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as abonbonnire. A bonbonniere is a small trinket box made of crystal, procelain and/or precious stones. The contents of these precious boxes were generally sugar cubes or delicate confections, which symbolize wealth and royalty. (In this era, sugar was an expensive commodity and was treasured only among the wealthy. It was believed that sugar contained medical benefits). As sugar became more affordable, bonbonnieres were replaced with Almonds.
For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bridegroom’s new life. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds which later evolved into the wedding favour for modern day weddings. Traditionally, five almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. Today, gifts to guests are commonly known as wedding favours and are shared in cultures worldwide, and have become a part of wedding reception planning, are diverse and can range from the classic sugared almonds to any small items.
