R. Austin Freeman, 1862-1943, was a British writer of detective stories, the Father of forensic crime fiction started his professional life as a physician and was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. His health forced him to change professions and he converted to be a writer of private detective stories featuring Dr. Thorndyke, including medico-legal forensic investigations, often using arcane scientific facts to help solve crimes. Mr. Pottermack was a settled, law-abiding resident with nothing to hide--apparently. But a gambler and blackmailer presented himself to expose his history.
