My Oldest Camera (1909-1917) A No 3 Brownie Box Camera Model B
A PRE 1917 NO 3 BROWNIE BOX CAMERA MODEL B MADE BY THE FAMOUS EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY IN THE USA WHO INTRODUCED MANY EARLY CAMERAS TO THE WORLD. IN GOOD CONDITION.
THE NO 3 BROWNIE CAMERA WAS A BOX CAMERA MADE BY EASTMAN KODAK CO LTD IN ROCHESTER USA BETWEEN 1908 AND DISCONTINUED IN 1934. IT HAD A MENISCUS ACHROMAT LENS AND A ROTARY SHUTTER WITH 3 APERTURE SETTINGS. OVER 1 MILLION WERE MADE WITH THEIR ORIGINAL PRICE BEING $4 IN 1908.
This camera is the basic leatherette covered card case design. The case is removed for loading film by releasing two pivoted catches and pulling out winding key to expose the metal film carrier. It has two reflecting viewfinders and tripod sockets. On the top front of the camera are slide-outs for a bulb(time) setting and f/holes for aperture settings controlling the front diameter of the rotary lens openings to allow more or less light in.
Variations: Aug 1911: "Model B" was added to the name. Additionally, the lens board had internal changes done. Aug 1917: The film tension springs were adjusted to bear on spool ends rather than the center of the film. Oct 1917: New case latches, with rounded milled ends, were added. Our model is a pre Oct 2017 model. 1920: A trigger guard was fitted. 1926: The coarse grain leatherette covering was changed to a finer grain.
The No.3 Brownie used 124 film and produced a very large negative perfect which gave postcard size prints. This camera was marketed with the idea of grabbing the business of vacationers. This demographic would flock to places like Coney Island, where photographers would photograph them and, at the end of the day, produce a "post-card" print. This is one of the Brownies that did that very same thing, cheaper with a bit longer waiting time for the print, of course.
SIZE: 11CM WIDE 13CM HIGH 16CM DEEP
CONDITION: SHUTTER STILL WORKS. APERTURE SETTINGS WORK. NEEDS CLEANING.
MARKINGS: NO 3 BROWNIE BOX CAMERA
