Natal early banking items like this are also sought after by bank note collectors. This script certificate of Share for 5 pound in the Commercial and Agriculture Bank of Natal dated and signed in Durban on the 21 July 1860 has a few interesting things to note. Firstly this bank was started in 1860 and failed in 1867. Some of the signatures include Robert Acutt a Natal pioneer who was the acting General Manager from 1860 to 1861. Robert had many businesses and was Director if many businesses, the town councillor of Durban and Co Founder of The Durban Club. The item has many endorsements and signatures another one belongs to Sir Lewis Loyd also involved in many banks as a manager he later become the Chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mining between 1902 and 1905 after Rhodes died. Other directors who signed this item George Henry Wirsing who was recognized as a financial expert at the time he later became the town councillor in Durban. Another signature on the reverseĀ John Sanderson he was a Newspaper editor Politician and member of the Natal Legislative Council and he had a term as the councillor of Durban. He was an excellent artist and is credited with having designed the coat of arms of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
