Oregano is also known as Wild Marjoram its a hardy evergreen which has sprawling stems and can grow up to 60cm tall. Although oregano and marjoram look similar to one and other there are differences, for instance marjoram has a seed head like knotted string and in fact can be called knotted marjoram. The flowers of oregano can be bright pink or white
To grow oregano from a seed it is recommended that you do this in the early spring.. You can sow the seeds in seedling trays (see our Plastic Seedling Trays), do not cover the tiny seeds with soil as they require light to help them germinate. Once the seedlings reach approximately 7.5 cm they can be transplanted outside in your garden, they prefer full sun and well drained soil. The best time to harvest oregano is before it flowers. If it flowers cut the stem with flower heads attached then hang upside down in a cool and airy spot. You can collect the seeds from the dried flowers.
Oregano is known to attract honey bees, that pollinate other flowering
