The Crucifix is a Catholic Devotional item used to remind us of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. More specifically, a crucifix is a sacramental meaning it can assist a practicing Catholic with growing in grace, but it has to be blessed by a Priest and used devoutly.
This Crucifix can be hung on the wall, worn around the neck on a chain carried in a pocket or handbag, or placed on a desk in our work places.
Throughout the life of the Church the crucifix has been an important devotional item for Catholics for these four reasons:
It is strongly encouraged to hang a crucifix in every Catholic home, traditionally one would be hung in every room.
The Church and Saints have always encouraged deeper devotion to the cross and to own your own crucifix. One of these Saints is that of St Josemaria Escriva. Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus,
while before Thy face I humbly kneel and,
with burning soul,
pray and beseech Thee
to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments
of faith, hope and charity;
true contrition for my sins,
and a firm purpose of amendment.
While I contemplate,
with great love and tender pity,
Thy five most precious wounds,
pondering over them within me
and calling to mind the words which David,
Thy prophet, said of Thee, my Jesus:
They have pierced My hands and My feet,
they have numbered all My bones."
Amen.
