Sceletium tortuosum - also known as Kanna, Channa, Kougoed
Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent from the Mesemb/Vygie family and is found in dry areas from the Cape to Namibia. It is
a highly prized medicine for the Bushmen and the Khoi alike since prehistoric times. It was traded with the Dutch in the
mid 1600's and brough to European attention by Swiss scientists in the mid 1700's
As is known from the traditional use of Sceletium and as has been confirmed by modern science it is a mild anti-
depressant, improves mood and decreases anxiety, stress and tension. {1}
According to the American Botanical Council “Mesembrine and related compounds have potential use... for the
management of... conditions, such as anxiety, depression, drug dependence, bulimia, and obsessive-compulsive
disorder.”{2}
