Typically, sodalite is coloured blue to blue violet. It may also have indigo and violet undertones.
It often has a vitreous shine and a smooth texture. Translucency may be present in certain specimens. The Mohs hardness of sodalite ranges from 5.5 to 6. Its frequent white veining can occasionally cause mistake with lapis lazuli.
