South Africa became a Republic in 1961, this token was made by SA Mint in Pretoria in 1966 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the event.
 
Obverse = In the centre, an arched stone bridge through which passes a road with a large numeral 5 along its surface, leading to mountains beyond. On the keystone of the bridge, a springbok head and the date = 1965 split left and right by the head. On a scroll above following the arch of the bridge on the left = REPUBLIEK VAN / SUID-AFRIKA and on a similar scroll on the right = REPUBLIC OF / .
 
Reverse = Coat of arms depicting shield with some antelope on left and right with a lion crest = JOHANNESBURG curve in lower rim of token.
 
Engravers = Professor R. Bain, n Mint, Pretoria.
 
Edge = Smooth.
 
Circulated.
