Foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The name Soweto, along with words like apartheid, Sharpeville, Biko and Mandela is instantly recognised in many parts of the world after the vents of 1976, when emotions boiled over in a froth of violence against the system in its many forms.

Soweto tells the story of these events, and the people involved in this struggle. However it goes beyond simply relating the political history of Soweto by focusing on the two million people who make up this lively and diverse community.as the pages unfold, the reader is taken down back alleys, through shebeens and beerhalls, into sports stadiums, churches and shanty towns.

In some areas ostentatious wealth contrasts sharply with the ghetto-like, crime-rife parts and the neat, regimented rows of matchbox houses, devoid of individual character that make up the bulk of middle class Soweto.

The striking photographs may show the violence and poverty that are part of  the large community in the world, but they also portray the prevailing passion, compassion and strength of Sowetos people.
