Common Names: Spekboom, Elephant Bush, Porkbush, Elephants Food Portulacaria afra, or Elephant Bush, is native to South Africa. In nature they will reach 4 m in height with an equal spread. In containers, they will stay much smaller and their size is easily controlled with selective pruning and pot size. It has now been shown to be effective in carbon sequestration (binding atmospheric carbon which is responsible for climate change) in semi-arid landscapes and thicket vegetation it is also being used for restoration purposes. The attractive reddish-brown stems with dark green leaves make a great bonsai plant with very little care involved. In the spring, they have clusters of small, inconspicuous pink flowers. These rooted cuttings will be sent without pots and with most soil removed. We'll remove the plant from the soil as it not only increases postage but also makes the parcel unstable. Above right is a photo of one of the actual plants which are planted in 7.5cm pots. |
