Strawberry Spinach also known as Strawberry Blite (Blitum Capitatum or Chenopodium capitatum) is an edible annual plant. It is not related to strawberries or spinach, but the plant is a member of the same family as spinach. It is native to most of North America throughout the United States and Canada. It is considered to be endangered in Ohio.
The fruit is small, pulpy, bright red, and edible, resembling strawberries, though their taste isn't as sweet. The juice from the fruit can also be used as a red dye. The fruit contains small, black, lens-shaped seeds that are 0.7-1.2mm long. The green leaves contain vitamins A and C, they are used raw or as a herb.
It should be consumed in moderation as they contain oxalates, so the seeds may also be toxic in large amounts.
Strawberry Spinach self-seeds easily, so you only need to sow it once.
