COLLECTING CEREAL BOX PLASTIC TOYS From the 1960's till the 1980's, Australian plastics manufacturing company Rosenhain & Lipmann (R&L) brought millions of children around the world unbounded joy in a small cellophane bag. Most less than 5cm tall, these brightly-coloured plastic premiums incited a collecting fervour amongst the younger Kellogg's Cornflakes customers like nothing seen before in cereal food marketing.. And despite the fact that millions were produced & exported across the globe, very few have survived the rigours of their toy-box existence to make it to the 21st Century. This unusual marriage of intense initial appeal & high mortality has resulted in their keen desirability today. By the end of the twentieth century the plastic toys in cereal boxes was no more. Although only one child choked to death on a plastic toy it became too exspensive to put these toys into cereal boxes. Some countries still produce plastic toys but countries like the UK and USA no more. In the past, most people collected stamps, coins and cards, but the love of cereal toys has now endured for more than 50 years.
R&L COMPANY (1954-1977): R&L (Rosenhain & Lipmann), an Australian company based in Melbourne, first produced toy inserts ('premiums') for boxed cereal in 1957. From 1958, these toys were made of plastic (solid polyethylene or solid/snap polystyrene), and each one was wrapped in clear cellophane. Initially, their designs were simple and unremarkable, with themes such as animals, people, and vehicles. From the late 1960s, some of the series that were appearing were unique, droll, and quite fantastic. In Australia, they were initially found inside cereal boxes (usually, one per box), but in other countries where some of the sets were distributed, they could be found in other products such as Cracker Jack in America. The R&L company was taken over by the firm Compañia General de Plasticos, S.A, of Mexico in 1977 where production continued into the 1990s. As recently as 2007, some of the Mexican version of the sets reappeared in jumbo packets of sweets.
