Title: SylvaC # 2421 St Bernard Puppy with Brandy Barrel by Stephen Czarnota Figurine. Manufactured By: SylvaC, Made In England, Circa 1960's Height: 13.0cm. Length: 10.0cm. Width: 5.0cm. Info: Rare SylvaC St. Bernard Dog Model no. 2421, seated with a Brandy Barrel, in beige colour. A retro art-deco style makes it an unusual figurine. A wonderful example from the much loved British manufacturer and is glazed with the very popular matt finish. Designed by Stephen Czarnota in the 60s as the "Sad Sam" range of dogs they are also referred to as Long Faced Dogs. Marked on the base with the number 2421 and the SylvaC Stamp. SylvaC (with a deliberate capital C at the end) is a brand of British ornamental pottery characterised primarily by figurines of animals and Toby Jugs.
The name "SylvaC" seems to have been registered by Shaw & Copestake in 1938. The SylvaC company briefly ceased production in 1982 although production of SylvaC pieces was resumed in 1998 by the current trademark holder Norman Williams. The company was founded in 1894 by William Copestake and William Shaw. They gave their names to the fledgling company - Shaw and Copestake. Copestake left in 1895, however, and Richard Hull became Shaw's partner. Hull's son joined in 1936 and in 1938 the Thomas Lawrence Falcon Pottery was bought (which produced pottery with the distinctive 'falcon' mark on it). However, the Shaw and Copestake company maintained its original name right up until the end. Wikipedia. / The Potteries.org
