Professor George Devenish has a long track record of teaching, writing and publishing on issues relating to South African constitutional law. He is the author of an earlier book entitled : A Commentary on the South African Constitution, which was published in 1998. His latest book is an expanded version of this, and was written as a result of the large number of legislative changes to, and court interpretations of, the Constitution. One must ask whether new developments in South African constitutional law could not have been dealt with in a second revised edition of A Commentary on the South African Constitution, rather than in a new book with a new title. The South African Constitution is 126 pages longer than A Commentary on the South African Constitution, and covers a number of new areas in greater depth (e.g. The Bill of Rights, and a chapter on local government). The new areas included in the chapter on The Bill of Rights cover issues such as equality, human dignity and the right to life, freedom and security of the person, privacy, the right to assembly, the right to demonstrate, picket and present petitions, freedom of association, movement and residence.
