Hardcover with dustjacket in good condition - small closed tear front of jacket and corner of back of jacket. waviness to back of jacket - could be water but there are no signs of this on the book itself. A good copy of this title.
Illustrated with 162 plates showing Baines paintings and sketches from the period held in the Brenthurst Collection and a map of the Eastern Cape, c. 1850. Most of the work shown here appears for the first time in print. Baines was a travelling artist who financed his African wanderings by selling his sketches, oils, and watercolours of which he produced perhaps 4000. His favourite subject is Table Mountain which he painted again and again, in various seasons and different lights. Baines was one of the Victorian adventurers, as the editor points out, not unduly influenced by loyalty to a particular place but a man of the Empire at home everywhere under the British flag. A splendidly produced and presented account of Baines African sojourn.
