The kumato is unique in both colour and taste. Kumatoes taste different to normal tomatoes, with a distinctly intense, crisp taste which relies on contrasting sweet and sour notes.
Kumato tomatoes have a firm and juicy texture, making them a perfect ingredient for salads and pasta dishes.
The kumato was first discovered by Luis Ortega in the 1970s on the Almerican coast in Spain. Luis realised tomatoes that received less water were darker in colour and much more intense in flavour. The young farmer decided to commit to growing a darker tomato with an authentic and intense flavour.
Kumatoes are not genetically modified. They were developed naturally from cross breeding domestic tomatoes with wild tomatoes growing freely in the Mediterranean region.
All kumato tomatoes are vine-ripened and picked when they are ready to eat, so there is no need to wait! They are best stored at room temperature and can keep for up to 2 weeks.
At 31 calories per 151 grams, kumatoes make the ultimate healthy snack. The dark crimson flesh of kumatoes is also high in fructose and low in acidity, allowing you to avoid those painful stomach aches caused by normal tomatoes.
