This is a fine example of traditional pottery style that has survived since the times of the Inca civilization. It features traditional Inca patterns, and a puma, frequently used in Inca iconography, decorates the handle.
Known as a salamanca, such vessels were used to store and serve chicha, an alcoholic drink made from corn. The liquid is put in from the opening at the bottom. When the pot is turned upright again, the liquid does not drop out, and it can be served by the puma-shaped opening in the front side.
