The Humanitarian Service Medal Set was issued to all branches of the US Military for meritorious direct participation in a sanctioned military operation of a humanitarian nature. Original Medal in box as issued. Box is dated 1994
The Humanitarian Service Medal is awarded to armed Forces Personnel who, after April 1st 1975, distinguished themselves by meritorious direct participation in a DOD sanctioned, significant military act or operation of a humanitarian nature. According to regulations, the participation must be "hands-on" at the site of operation. Personnel assigned to staff functions or who are geographically separated from the theater of operations are not eligible for the award. Service members must also be assigned to the participating unit/s by official orders. Members who were present at the qualifying location, but did not directly contribute to the action or operation are specifically excluded from eligibility as well.
The medal depicts an outstretched right hand with the palm facing up. The back depicts an oak branch with three acorns. The ribbon is light blue with a medium wide center stripe of navy blue. It is edged by purple bands separated from the light blue by thin white stripes. Additional awards may be indicated by bronze and silver stars if awarded.
