Vintage 1950s Albert Thewalt Germany Stoneware Lidded Beer Stein 1198 Country Scene Mould

AN ORIGINAL ALBERT THEWALT MARKED BEER STEIN MADE IN GERMANY CIRCA 1950S. IT HAS A SCALLOPED PEDASTAL BASE WHICH IS A BIT UNUSUAL. THE PEWTER LID IS MARKED DBGM WHICH FURTHER AUTHENTICATES ITS GERMAN ORIGENS.
 
Albert J. Thewalt started the stoneware factory in 1893, he was following a long family tradition. His father and grandfather were also potters and beer stein makers since 1781. Thewalt is the oldest beer stein factory in Hhr-Grenhausen in the Westerwaldnd region. It ceased stein production in 2009/10.

The wonderful bulbous stoneware relief stein has a depiction of a country couple in a meadow between two homes. With the cobalt blue coloring accenting the hand painted picture encompassing the steinit certainly gives it an air of distinction! The tree branch shaped handle is richly detailed and it has an ornately detailed lid attached.

The base is stamped with the triangle T the triangle and T impressed mark was used from 1930 onwards. The handle hides the form/mold number 1198. The lid is stamped with DBGM and DRM inside a triangle. This is Deutsches Bundes-Gebrauchsmuster (German Federal Registered Design). This dates it to 1949 or later.
 
This Thewalt #1198 beer stein showcases the exceptional artistry and attention to detail that Thewalt is renowned for. MARKINGS: T IN TRIANGLE ALBERT THEWALT IMPRESSED MARK USED FROM 1930 ONWARDS
LID: The marking DBGM. This is Deutsches Bundes-Gebrauchsmuster (German Federal Registered Design). This dates it to 1949 or later. On the other hand, DRGM, which means the same except Reichinstead of Federal, dates it to 1891- 1949.
 
SIZE: 14CM WIDE UP TO HANDLE 24CM HIGH UP TO LID FINIAAL
CONDITION: NO DAMAGE. VERY GOOD CONDITION.
 
ALBERT THEWALT (1882-2009):
Albert Jacob Thewalt (b.5th August 1857 - d.29th November 1939) co-founded in around 1882 Paulus & Thewalt with Jean Paulus, who became his brother in law in 1883. 
He left this partnership on the 1st July 1894 to start his own stoneware company in the Rhineland of Germany.
Wilhelm Kamp designed the first stein in 1897, and all subsequent steins until he left in 1914.
Succeeded by son, Albert Johann (b.16th December 1884 - d.19th March 1957) and then grandson, Albert Jakob (b.6th August 1926). 
Stein production finally ceased on 31st October 2009.
